Hatchery efficiency as a conservation tool in threatened sea turtle rookeries with high embryonic mortality

چکیده
Sea turtles are globally endangered and facing anthropogenic threats. To mitigate the negative impacts on sea turtle populations, different conservation strategies have been developed implemented. For instance, when an population suffers a high embryonic mortality from predation, human poaching, beach flooding or erosion, relocation of clutches to safer controlled areas can lower these However, use hatcheries is controversially discussed, with some previous studies reporting results such as low hatching success, skewed sex ratio phenotypic alterations hatchlings. In this study, we evaluated efficiency compared in-situ incubation in Cabo Verde using data six nesting seasons (2013–2018). During several thousand high-risk loggerhead (Caretta caretta Linnaeus, 1758) were relocated hatchery constructed within Turtle Natural Reserve (STNR, Boa Vista Island). Our findings confirmed that nests STNR extremely egg usually over 70%. Mean success was significantly higher than mean values between 70 85%. No significant differences observed period, size behavioural response hatchlings clutches. As long low, clutch programs which designed impact at level, considered efficient tool contributes its recuperation. Nevertheless, strict recommendations increase while maintaining natural hatchling phenotype must be

Hawksbill turtle terra incognita: conservation genetics of eastern Pacific rookeries.
Prior to 2008 and the discovery of several important hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) nesting colonies in the EP (Eastern Pacific), the species was considered virtually absent from the region. Research since that time has yielded new insights into EP hawksbills, salient among them being the use of mangrove estuaries for nesting. These recent revelations have raised interest in the gene...
متن کاملGlobal sea turtle conservation successes
We document a tendency for published estimates of population size in sea turtles to be increasing rather than decreasing across the globe. To examine the population status of the seven species of sea turtle globally, we obtained 299 time series of annual nesting abundance with a total of 4417 annual estimates. The time series ranged in length from 6 to 47 years (mean, 16.2 years). When levels o...

متن کاملEvaluating Strategies to Promots Sea Turtle Conservation
Like many sea turtles worldwide (Figure 1), loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) populations are declining by approximately three percent annually and the species is currently provided federally threatened status. Two potentially beneficial strategies could boost loggerhead populations. First, conservation groups have successfully limited access to beaches during the time when females lay th...
متن کاملTourism Revenue as a Conservation Tool for Threatened Birds in Protected Areas
Many bird populations worldwide are at risk of extinction, and rely heavily on protected area networks for their continued conservation. Tourism to these areas contributes to conservation by generating revenue for management. Here we quantify the contribution of tourism revenue for bird species in the IUCN Red List, using a simple accounting method. Relevant data are available for 90 (16%) of t...
